Caring for Your Teeth for Better Personal Health

You notice someone’s beautiful smile and you want to credit the white teeth, but the coloring is only one reason why it looks attractive. In a healthy smile, the teeth blend in with a person who has a well-proportioned face. In an attractive smile, the top teeth show fully in a good proportion to your gums. The line where the gums and teeth meet is smooth and even.

A cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills, Dr. Sam Saleh of Ora Dentistry Spa, designs smiles for celebrities who are their own global brands and leading professionals from around the world. He says teeth are more than just tools for chewing food.

Teeth are like steel girders in a building or supports for a bridge since they support the lips and lower third of the face. Chipped or cracked teeth, and ones that are wearing down, can lead to poor alignment of the facial features.

Each year, teeth wear down for multiple reasons. Stress can cause people to grind their teeth while they’re sleeping and this leads to jaw pain and headaches in severe cases. What you drink also impacts your teeth. Juices and sodas have high levels of acidity and slowly erode teeth.

“Restoring teeth that are in poor shape can truly change a patient’s appearance. In an attractive smile, the top teeth show fully in a good proportion to your gums. The line where the gums and teeth meet is smooth and even,” says Dr. Saleh.

So what about yellow teeth? They can also detract from a smile. Whitening strips alone may not take care of the problem if tooth enamel is thin.

Tooth enamel is the hard, white surface of your teeth, and underneath is a pale brown substance called dentin. Thick enamel looks white, but thin enamel allows dentin tones to show through, making teeth look yellow from the outside. Ora Dentistry Spa’s tooth whitening service is customized based on the patient’s natural coloring and enamel thickness.

“A concern I hear on a daily basis is if whitening the teeth will cause a loss of tooth structure,” says Dr. Saleh. “That’s a misconception. You’re not losing a layer of your natural tooth structure. In the process, an oxygen molecule from inside the gel goes inside the tooth which is porous and removes the stain molecules.”

Here are a few tips in caring for your teeth from Ora Dentistry Spa’s Oral Hyigene Instructions.

Instead of sodas or other carbonated drinks like sparkling water, drink water flavored with fruit or cucumbers.

Don’t let your mouth go dry since a lack of salvia also erodes the enamel. Stay hydrated and chew sugarless gum when needed to stimulate the saliva flow.

Brush your teeth in a gentle, circular motion and floss regularly to get rid of the bacteria from food particles that get trapped in between teeth.

Want a change from your normal toothpaste? Try this. Brush with baking soda and strawberries.

Baking soda is a mild abrasive material that removes surface materials well. Combine it with strawberries which have malic acid that gets inside the tooth and removes stain molecules. Mix the strawberries and baking soda, brush, and leave it on for 5 minutes and then rinse well.

Your teeth deserve to be well-cared for. After all, if you noticed a wall in a building sag then you’d check the supports. Your teeth, for you, are just as valuable.
